In May 2015, Heritage Golf Club made international golfing history by playing host to the first ever tri-sanctioned golf tournament in the world endorsed by the European, Sunshine and Asian Tours, The AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open. In so doing, it became the first Indian Ocean course to host a European Tour Event and part of the exclusive “Race to Dubai” calendar. The tournament is coming back to Heritage Golf Club from 30th November – 3 December 2017 and will be attracting top international players. This 72-hole stroke play championship will oppose 158 professional golf players, comprising of 40 top players from each of the participating tours during a four-day event. The scores from this tournament count towards the individual tours’ Order of Merit and Race to Dubai with a total prize fund for the taking of 1 million Euros.
Highlights of the 2015 edition at Heritage Resorts
The exceptional golf event came with big names in 2015: the winner of the BMW PGA Championship / DP World Tour Championship, Simon Khan (England) and winners of Race to Dubai tournaments, Andrew Dodt (Australia), Thomas BJØRN (Denmark), Thorbjørn OLESEN (Denmark), Scott HEND (Australia) as well as Mikael Lundberg (Sweden). George Coetzee was crowned the champion of the 2015 edition after playing the 18th hole three times and will be back to defend his title in 2017.
The first par four hole-in-one of the history of the three co-sanctioning tours was made on the 9th hole by Spain’s Javier Colomo in the second round of the tournament. The 2016 edition was won by Jeunghun Wang, this win made Wang the first player to win in consecutive weeks since Rory McIIroy claimed the WGC Bridgestone Invitational followed by the US PGA championship in 2014.
Heritage Resorts ambassador
We are very proud to announce that Jaco Van Zyl, European and Sunshine Tour professional will be making his 3rd appearance at the AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open in 2017 as Heritage Resorts ambassador. Van Zyl has won 13 Sunshine Tour titles, including four in 2010 and recently put on a great performance in the Made in Denmark European Tour event where he finished in a tie for 6th place on -11 under par. In February 2016, Van Zyl reached the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking.
