Exploring Tamarin

When you explore Tamarin, you discover Mauritius. It’s a concentrate of different cultures, outdoor activities and nature, and is a must-see for anyone who wants an active holiday in the sun. First stop: the Bay

A few steps away from the Veranda Tamarin is the legendary Tamarin Bay. The excellent left on its Dal surfing spot has attracted surfers from around the world since the 1960s. To really feel like a Tamarinois, you need to give your surfboard to Funky to polish and buy your wax at the Tamarin Surf Shop. But the bay is also a much-loved meeting place. In the morning, it’s frequented by fishermen, joggers and yogis. In late afternoon and at the weekend, families of every origin converge on the beach to body-board, build sand castles and catch some waves! In the evening, locals gather around bonfires to jam and sip cold Phoenix beer.

Good to know:Veranda Tamarin has its own surf school for those who are keen to give surfing a try! You can also explore the Bay by kayak, stand-up paddle or pedal boat.

Next up: nature attractions

Tamarin village is nestled at the heart of some of Mauritius’ most beautiful natural areas. A few minutes from Veranda Tamarin are the Salines de Yemen, an iconic salt works in which salt continues to be harvested using traditional methods. If you enjoy walking, head to the Black River Gorges National Park for a forest adventure. In addition to its physical benefits, the park’s hikes are an opportunity to learn about the island’s endemic plant and animal life. On the way back, cool off with an ice-cold Eski at Carlos Superette – a typical “tabagie”, or corner store – and make sure you try the sushi at Point G!

Still feeling up for a challenge? Head to Le Morne, a UNESCO World Heritage Site 15 minutes’ drive away from Tamarin. Between the spectacular mountain, which is accessible to hikers, and the crystal clear waters of its lagoon, ideal for kitesurfing and windsurfing, you certainly won’t be bored! On your way there, take a detour via Chamarel to enjoy its gorgeous views of the island.

Good to know: Before you leave the hotel, make sure to take your beach kit (a basket, cooler, mat and beach towels, which you’ll find in your room) and stock up on Mauritian snacks at the Kas Dal grocery store.
